Advice from Milton Glaser December 6, 2006
I was browsing around last night and came across Milton Glaser’s Ten Things I Have Learned, part of an AIGA Talk he did in London (which sounds funny for me to hear since AIGA is an American institution). The essay is a beautiful testament to the wealth of knowledge and advice that Mr. Glaser has to share with all of us through his decades of experience in the graphic design industry. Personally, aside from Steven Heller’s contributions to the industry, I can’t think of another designer who has influenced me more through his writings and presentations.
Here is Mr. Glaser’s Top Ten, but I highly recommend reading his essay for the full context of each of them:
- YOU CAN ONLY WORK FOR PEOPLE THAT YOU LIKE.
- IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE NEVER HAVE A JOB.
- SOME PEOPLE ARE TOXIC AVOID THEM.
- PROFESSIONALISM IS NOT ENOUGH or THE GOOD IS THE ENEMY OF THE GREAT.
- LESS IS NOT NECESSARILY MORE.
- STYLE IS NOT TO BE TRUSTED.
- HOW YOU LIVE CHANGES YOUR BRAIN.
- DOUBT IS BETTER THAN CERTAINTY.
- ON AGING. (Aging doesn’t matter)
- TELL THE TRUTH.
